A Warren man is facing more than a dozen felony charges following an investigation that began with a missing person report filed in New York State.
Michael J. Bundy III, 24, of Warren, has been charged by Warren City Police with thirteen felony counts across two separate cases. The charges include one count of first-degree felony rape by forcible compulsion, two counts of second-degree statutory sexual assault involving a victim between the ages of 8 and 11, and two counts of second-degree aggravated indecent assault by forcible compulsion. Two counts of second-degree statutory sexual assault involving a victim between 8-11 years or older, two counts of second-degree felony sexual assault, two counts of second-degree felony aggravated indecent assault by forcible compulsion, two counts of second-degree felony aggravated indecent assault without consent, two counts of second-degree felony aggravated indecent assault by compulsion less than 16, second-degree felony strangulation, third-degree felony corruption of minors involving a defendant age 18 or above, and second-degree misdemeanor charges of indecent assault without consent of other and indecent assault person less than 16 years of age.
According to a criminal complaint and affidavit of probable cause, the investigation began on June 8th, when New York State Police issued a report for a missing teenage girl. On June 16th, Warren City Police were contacted with updated information suggesting the girl may have traveled to Warren.
Officers were initially unable to locate her, but on June 21st, police received a tip that the girl was allegedly staying at Bundy's apartment. Officers went to the residence and, although Bundy was not home at the time, found the girl inside. She was taken into protective custody, and authorities in New York were immediately notified.
Bundy was arrested later that day at his workplace. He was initially detained on a probation detainer while police continued their investigation and formalized charges.
During a June 22nd interview with police, Bundy admitted to knowing the girl had run away from home and said he allowed her to stay at his apartment. He claimed the teen had originally traveled to Warren to meet one of his coworkers, who declined to see her. Bundy told investigators he allowed her to stay after that meeting fell through.
On June 23rd, a forensic interview was conducted at the Children’s Advocacy Program in Jamestown, New York. According to investigators, the girl stated she ran away from home and contacted a friend on Snapchat, who drove her around Jamestown and later to Warren at her request. When that friend no longer wanted her to stay, the girl said she had nowhere to go.
She told authorities that Bundy offered her a place to stay but made her believe she had to perform sexual favors in order to remain there. Details of those interactions have not been released due to the age of the victim and the ongoing nature of the investigation.
