An $85 billion merger between Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern could see the first transcontinental railroad in the U.S.

The deal would see more than 50,000 miles of railroad track in 43 states.

Christopher DeFeo, president of DeFeo Materials, a company that ships products like aggregate, stone and gravel and relies heavily on rail transport to distribute its material, said this move would have a huge impact on his business.

If the deal is approved, the two remaining major American railroads, BNSF and CSX may face pressure to also merge just to stay competitive.
