There is a field of 1.2 million sunflowers blooming in Girard. They are growing in a field on the historic Battle's estate.

The Hagen History Center has partnered with a company that will turn these sunflowers into alcohol.

Before they are harvested, the history center wants people to enjoy them first. They will be having several events this week as part of Girard Sunflower Fest.

There will be picnics in the sunflowers starting Monday.

“You receive charcuterie with that and a bottle of wine,” said Hagen’s project manager, Pam Parker. “Everything is from Full Circle [Winery] just down the road.”

Later this week, there will be sunflower dinners, painting and flower-arranging classes.

“Everything will take place in the sunflowers. We’re going to clear some space so that you’re obviously not standing in them. Some of them will occur at the Yellow House. Some of them, you will enter from the White House,” she said.

The flowers have already gotten attention, like from a photographer who used to live in Girard.

“We saw, like, an empty field when we were here last. It was kind of fun just to see how many sunflowers there [are],” Jan Thoms said.

More information is available here. The events run through Saturday.
