Health officials confirm two mosquito samples from Millcreek and Harborcreek Townships tested positive for West Nile virus in late July.

These are the seventh and eighth positive samples in Erie County this year, but no human cases have been reported so far.

West Nile virus can cause serious illness, especially in older adults or those with weakened immune systems.

To reduce mosquito populations, residents are urged to eliminate standing water around their homes. This includes emptying containers, cleaning gutters, and maintaining pools.

Officials also recommend using insect repellents with DEET, wearing long sleeves and pants, and staying indoors during peak mosquito activity at dawn and dusk.

The county will continue monitoring and take control measures as needed. For now, simple steps like removing water sources and using proper lighting can help keep mosquitoes at bay.
