Attorney Crump: Video Evidence Contradicts Police Account of Marchello Woodard's Death
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump claims that the video evidence provided to the legal team of Marchello Woodard's family contradicts the state police account of his death.
"You don't need to say no more," said Crump. "Just look at the video of how they killed Chello."
Last month, Woodard was shot and killed in his vehicle by a state parole officer, during a compliance check.
According to state police, the officer shot Woodard while he was being dragged by his vehicle.
Based on video evidence, Crump says that's not the case.
"Based on the video, you don't have to take the police word at what happened," said Crump. "You can see it for yourself."
Erie News Now obtained the video brought into question.
It captures Woodard pulling up to a home near East 27th and Parade Streets, followed by a vehicle occupied by two parole officers.
After both officers approached the vehicle separately, several shots rang out and Woodard's vehicle is seen driving away.
According to Crump, the officer fired at Woodard before he drove off.
"The case is on the video," said Crump. "They fired those shots and the car had not moved."
The Woodard family legal team is calling on the Erie County District Attorney's Office for charges to be filed.
Depending on the outcome of the DA's investigation, they are considering filing a civil rights lawsuit.
"We have the discretion as civil rights lawyers to file a civil rights, wrongful death lawsuit against the state of Pennsylvania, based on what we've seen in that video." said Crump.
In a previous statement, District Attorney Elizabeth Hirz said that she appreciates everyone's patience, but the investigation will take time.
