Tenth Mosquito Sample Tests Positive for West Nile Virus in Erie County
A mosquito sample collected in Millcreek Township on July 29 has tested positive for West Nile virus, the Erie County Department of Health announced. This is the tenth positive mosquito sample in Erie County this year. No human cases have been reported.
Officials said additional mosquito monitoring will be conducted in affected areas, and control measures will be taken depending on the number and type of mosquitoes found.
Certain mosquito species can transmit West Nile virus to humans, potentially causing West Nile encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain. Older adults and people with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of severe illness.
Health officials urge residents to reduce mosquito breeding grounds by eliminating standing water around homes. Recommended steps include disposing of containers such as tires and cans, cleaning clogged gutters, checking storm drains, and emptying water from outdoor items like boats, toys, and pots.
