Millcreek Township Legal Fees Raise Questions
The Millcreek Township Government Study Commission's final report is done and is currently at the Erie County Board of Elections, ahead of Election Day.
In Appendix C in the report, the Commission compared the five-year averages of legal fees for the five most populous second class townships in Pennsylvania.
"We see that Millcreek has spent, on average, just over $500-550,000 more, per year, in legal expenses," said James DeDad, treasurer for the Commission.
DeDad explained that is has become typical for township supervisors to ask the attorneys for legal guidance.
"We have new supervisors coming in and they may not be knowledgeable enough about the processes, so they rely on the attorneys' help and direction," DeDad said.
DeDad said having the Council-Manager form of government tough, can change that.
"This appears to be an area where the township, with the changing the form of government, can easily save up to $500,000 a year with an experienced township manager," DeDad said.
The Millcreek Township solicitor had no comment at this time.
