Efforts to improve Five Mile Creek have started.

Officials held a groundbreaking ceremony for the project Wednesday at Rolling Ridge Park in Harborcreek.

Harborcreek Twp. got $250 thousand in funding from the county to tackle water pollution and sediment buildup.

The goal is to protect the health of Lake Erie.

They will be removing sediment and planting trees, brush, and wildflowers to stabilize the creek bank and prevent erosion.

Erie County Executive Brenton Davis said, even though this work is required by the commonwealth, it is a “win-win” for the environment.

The new greenery will be planted in a few weeks, Harbocreek Twp. Supervisor Steve Oler said.
