Beach 11 at Presque Isle Closed for Swimming for Rest of Season
Beach 11 at Presque Isle State Park will remain closed to swimmers for the rest of the summer due to persistently high E. coli levels.
Experts say the beach’s shallow water, minimal wave action, and large goose population create ideal conditions for bacteria growth. July’s hot, humid weather worsened the problem.
Water samples are tested daily, and an average E. coli level is calculated. Once that average exceeds safe limits, it is difficult to reverse — even if later tests show improvement. Officials say that’s what happened at Beach 11.
Testing at the site has stopped, and lifeguards have been reassigned to other locations. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy other swimming areas at Presque Isle.
