Warren, PA - The Warren County Democratic Committee hosted a bipartisan celebration and rally at the courthouse Thursday to mark the 90th anniversary of the Social Security Act.

Committee Chairman Aaron Stearns led the event, which was open to the public and focused on the message that Social Security is not just a right or left issue, but a national one that affects people across the country.

“Social Security has been a lifeline for millions of Americans, including the people here in Warren County,” Stearns said. "It is a very important act and one that we feel very strongly about."

Warren County Democratic Committee member Jacob Devereaux echoed that sentiment, stressing the need to protect the program for the future.

“I spoke today about the future of Social Security," Devereaux said. "Today it is on the edge of collapsing and running out of funds. We are looking for ways that we can keep it going for us and for future generations."

After the program, participants moved to the corner of Market and Fourth streets, holding signs and showing support for keeping Social Security strong.

“So many people here depend on it,” said Freda Pyles, Warren County resident. "It's provided survival for millions of Americans and Americans with health problems. We have to fight to keep it."

The Social Security Act was signed into law in 1935 under President Franklin D. Roosevelt and now provides benefits to more than 66 million Americans.

Organizers from the event in Warren say that regardless of political affiliation, Social Security is essential for everyone and it is their hope that rallies like this one will remind everyone why protecting Social Security is important.
