Bayfront Parkway Closure Begins
Starting Tuesday, parts of the Bayfront Parkway will be closed for the next year for the Bayfront construction projects. This will force drivers to find alternative routes when heading down to the bayfront and navigating their way around the city
Jill Harry, the Press Officer for PennDot explained, "If you need to get through the city, you need to use 12th Street, if you need to come down to the waterfront, you can still do that as well, you need to use West and East Front Streets."
State Street is closed at 2nd Street, so heading all the way down to the bayfront is no longer an option, a large portion of the parkway is now also closed and will be closed for the next year.
As Harry explained, "It's closed between Sassafras and Holland, which means you can access the waterfront at both Sassafras and Holland, you just can't turn onto the bayfront from either of those directions, so you can drive down Holland and turn eastward. If you are approaching from Sassafras from the Convention Center you can go westward , but you can't get to State Street from those intersections."
The detours could pose some confusion to drivers, but all the businesses will remain open on the waterfront. People may just need to build in some extra time.
According to Harry, "The destinations, amenities are open to everyone. If you are coming from one side of the city, you will come to Sassafras and then you will turn on West Front Street extension and you can go straight over to Holland and Holland you can go in reverse and go East Front Street to the whole way to Sassafras. This is a detour specifically to access those businesses and those destinations. So we ask folks to not use it for thru-traffic, so you can get to those places and others an get to them as well."
Speed bumps, more traffic lights, and other signage has been placed along Front Street for the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. The Bayfront Parkway is expected to be closed for the next year.
