Preparations Underway to Move Historic Erie Home
We've seen the dramatic investment that businessman and Erie Insurance Chairman Tom Hagen has made in dozens of homes on Erie's Millionaire's Row along West 6th Street.
Now a West 7th Street home he's invested in, the 141 year old Olds-Norman house, will be picked up and moved to West 6th Street to join its historic neighbors.
Preparation work is underway by a specialty contractor, Wolfe Home & Building Movers from Bernville, PA near Harrisburg.
Right now their team is threading heavy steel support beams through the stone foundation of the home, and using hydraulic jacks to begin to support it for the move.
It will then be dollied into its new home using what are essentially trailer axels, each equipped with 50 ton jacks. The home will stay suspended in place over a new footer on West 6th Street until Kidder Jefferys Construction can build a new cement block foundation underneath and the steel supports are removed.
Space for the move was made possible by the demolition of a former Gannon University dormitory. Gannon University plans to use the historic home as a guest house for campus visitors and board members.
The move is expected to take place Monday September 22 in the late morning. After weeks of preparation work, the move should only take 90 minutes to 2 hours.
