The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is reminding pedestrians to follow the marked detour when crossing the Bayfront Parkway.

The detour includes Third St. and Holland St. on the city side of the parkway, and East Front St. and West Front St. Extension on the waterfront side.

“We are stressing to residents and visitors that there is no pedestrian access or crossing of the parkway at State Street,” Dax Nulph, PennDOT District 1 Assistant Executive of Construction, said. “For the safety of those walking between the city and the waterfront, it is important that everyone follows the detour signs, uses the marked crosswalks, and takes advantage of the signalized intersections.”

Several improvements to pedestrian safety and access were made before the closure, PennDOT said.

It is closed between Sassafrass St. Extension and Holland St.

The closure, which started Sept. 2, is expected to last about a year.
