Wind Phone Connects Callers to Their Lost Loved Ones: The Last Word
I'm on the grounds of Faith Lutheran Church on East Lake Road in Harborcreek. It's beautiful here. Trees. Picnic tables. A wonderful view of the lake. And a phone?
Yes. There is a phone on the beautiful church grounds. It's a plain rotary phone, but it does serve a beautiful purpose. It's called a wind phone.
The concept was first introduced in Japan 15 years ago.
It’s simple. You pick up the phone and start talking. Your words are directed to a loved one you have lost.
The phone has no wires, but you believe that your loving message is being carried through the wind.
Dawn Danilov is a congregation member at Faith Lutheran Church. She read an article last year about wind phones and was excited to share it.
"I kind of passed this on to [the] pastor and said, ‘This is really a great idea. We have space on the property. Maybe this could happen,’” she said.
Reverend Jean Kuebler is the pastor of the church. She did her own research on wind phones.
She read stories about how picking up a phone in a beautiful outdoor area has helped people deal with their sadness. Pastor Jean moved the project forward.
"So many of us are grieving the loss of family members, of friends, of our pets,” she said. “There [are] so many unfinished conversations and things we wished we said."
Construction of the wind phone at Faith Lutheran Church was completed in June.
It's the first wind phone in northwest Pennsylvania. There are only about 450 of them worldwide, according to mywindphone.com. This is a public wind phone open to anyone. Faith Lutheran Church is already receiving messages of thanks.
"It's a wonderful thing,” Danilov said. “I think it's a lovely tribute to people we have lost and a place for people to grieve and say what's on their heart and let the wind carry your words."
"It's about love. It's about love,” Pastor Kuebler added. “It's about love stronger than death and a connection that's stronger than death. That's a happy thing."
A dedication ceremony for the wind phone will be held this Sunday at Faith Lutheran Church. The church is at 5414 East Lake Rd. in Harborcreek.
It starts at 2 p.m.
Funeral directors and grief counselors will speak, and a blessing will be said. Refreshments will be served.
