Historic House Move Set for Monday Morning
We've been keeping you up to date on plans to move the historic Olds-Sweet-Norman house from West 7th Street to West 6th Street, and Monday September 22 is the day.
The more than 140-year-old home will make the big move around 10:00 a.m. Monday, thanks to the worker of Kidder Jeffreys Construction and the specialists Wolfe House & Building Movers from the Harrisburg area.
As Erie News Now has documented, they've jacked up the Queen Anne-style house originally built for Clark Olds (1850 - 1922) and his wife Livia Elizabeth Keator Olds (1855-1919). Olds was a prominent attorney for more than 46 years with expertise in maritime law. The property's legacy continued with the family's son Irving Sands Olds (1887-1963) who rose to national prominence as chairman and CEO of U.S. Steel and a noted authority on naval history.
After four decades with the Olds family the home was sold to Dr. Berton W. Sweet and his wife Myrtle, who used the property as both a medical office and residence. Sweet was a pioneer in osteopathic medicine, and his son Dr. Hazzard Sweet practices there as well until his death.
The property was sold to Ronald R. Norman who operated the highly regarded Ron Norman Photography Studio in the home for 50 years.
On Monday the elevated home will be moved into the open trench excavated north of the home, rotated and then moved into open space on West 6th street left vacant after the recent tear down of a 1950's era Gannon University dormitory.
It's all part of the restoration investment of longtime Erie businessman and Erie Insurance chairman Tom Hagen, who grew up in the neighborhood. The home along with dozens of others will be maintained in perpetuity thanks to the historic Erie Preservation Trust Hagen established at the Erie Community Foundation.
Gannon University will use the home as short-term lodging for guests visiting the university.
Spectators will be able to watch the house move on Monday, but will be kept in protected areas. You can see the best spots for viewing on an attached map. Street parking will be restricted on West 6th and Sassafras Streets, and a portion of West 7th street in front of the home will be closed to traffic.
Gannon University is expected to stream the move. Erie News Now will be there to cover the event on Monday.
