The Girard School Board has voted to close the pool at Girard High School for the rest of the school year.

The decision was made the board meeting Monday. The closure takes effect immediately.

"Because the safety and well-being of our students and community remain our highest priority, the Board has determined that the pool can no longer be used for classes, athletics, or community activities," the district said in a statement.

The most significant concern was about air quality in the pool area, the district said.

The pool was built along with the rest of the high school in 1974, superintendent David Koma said.

The Elk Creek Recreation Board will provide refunds to participants of scheduled events at the pool.

The district will evaluate whether to reopen the pool in the future.
