A Peek Inside Renovations Inside Erie's Veterans Memorial Stadium
Work is well underway at Erie's Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Erie school district is spending more than a million dollars to fund much-needed upgrades to the 95-year-old stadium, which was dedicated to honor World War I veterans.
Erie News Now got a look inside at the work being done this week.
Pittsburgh-based Carl Walker Construction is tasked with replacing all the handrails, and their main objective is replacing the concrete steps and walls, and painting, “So far construction is going at a great pace, we are really far ahead as far as my expectations, even with weather conditions we are moving along quite well,” said John Mckenzie, Concrete Superintendent with Carl Walker Construction.
The contractor just laid the concrete for the lower wall this week, they’ve completed half, with the other half set to be done in the coming weeks.
This work will all make way for the brand-new turf to be installed in mid-July.
And Erie High Football Quarterback, Trevon Tate, is excited to see what’s to come, “More than excited actually, we actually get to have our own home and I feel the crowd excitement is going to be way higher, and I just can't wait to see what it's going to bring.,” said Tate.
All the handrails throughout the stadium will be purple, one of the school colors of the Erie High Royals.
Football Head Coach Rob Matz says that will do a lot for school spirit, “There's a lot of purple and gold and yellow around, the kids just want some ownership for themselves, they're very excited, they want to have pride in their school, and have pride in the field that they play on.”
Athletes from many sports like soccer football will call this stadium their home field, “It's definitely going to bring up the spirit, when we have the fan section all wearing purple and gold, and then to see it on the field it's going to bring us to that next level,” said Tate.
The hope is all construction will be completed by the end of August, in time for fall sports.
The Veterans Memorial Stadium Commission is funding the cost for the new turf. The revenue from the Commission comes mostly from concession sales and rental income.
