Shelters worry as eviction moratorium ends
Community shelter services in Erie has been around for years, providing shelter to those who suddenly find themselves without a home.
"You have families who come in here, and they were caught up in it. They may have lost jobs. They may have lost their home,” said Diane Lazette of Community Shelter Services.
With the national eviction moratorium ending, evictions can start up again on August 1st.
This shelter is worried their facilities will soon fill up. They're already gearing up for extra guests.
"It may be a little tight quarters, but at least we know they'll have a warm, dry place to go,” said Lazette.
The average cost of rent in the United States is $1,098. In Erie County, the average comes in at $846 Even though Erie is below the national average, some say they still can't make ends meet.
Erie County Executive, Kathy Dahlkemper tells us that's why there's emergency funding out there.
"We have to get to a place where we lift this moratorium. I say that because there is this assistance out there,” said Dahlkemper.
Pennsylvania's Emergency Rental Assistance Program allows tenants and landlords who have been impacted by COVID-19 to apply for funds to pay rent, past due balances, and utilities.
Dahlkemper tells us over 1,600 in the county have received rental assistance and about 2,600 people have applied.
"I don't see eviction being a problem in Erie County with the amount of money we have available,” Dahlkemper said.
But, Community Shelter Services doesn't see it that way. They say they can almost guarantee they'll see an influx of guests as soon as this week. "If you are faced with an eviction you were not prepared for, hopefully we'll have a place for you to stay,” said Lazette.
