Rockin' Out with Erie's Own Hellz Bellz: Paying Tribute
Erie News Now is wrapping up a week's worth of stories on the recent surge in the number, and popularity of tribute bands.
Playing Tribute will wrap up with a band that's made quite a name for themselves on the local music scene over the past couple years.
They're called "Hellz Bellz" and they pay tribute to Australian heavy metal legends AC/DC.
"People say 'oh, AC/DC, so simple," said Crock. "If it's so simple, why don't you write one like that?"
For Jeffrey Crock and the rest of popular local AC/DC tribute band "Hellz Bellz", it's a simple formula.
One that's worked over the course of their three-year run. Stick with the music that they, and their fans love.
"We've got the amps, they've got the numbers, and they come to see us," said Crock. "We don't have to 'hey, play the song of the month...No."
Like their musical idols, Hellz Bellz has two brothers on guitar. Frank and Nick Belluomini have been band mates almost as long as they've been brothers.
"We want to take people back to what it would've been like to see AC/DC back in the day. We have 56 songs last I counted," said Frank. "A lot of the old Bon Scott, all the way up to Brian Johnson. And they're still rockin, so we're still learning the new stuff."
While the whole band tries to match AC/DC musically, singer Jeff Crock and lead guitarist Frank Bellamini take the tribute a step further.
"I try to really emulate them. I try to do the positions and everything else," said Crock. "Some days, you just wanna throw it back and get you hands into position and rock it out with Angus. We have out little collisions, cause you gotta watch out, he's a heat seeking missile on stage. We've had some collisions on stage, but its fun."
The guys in Hellz Bellz say they've noticed the recent tribute band explosion, and say the more the merrier.
As far as their future goes, they plan on staying back in black, for as long as they can.
"It is funny when you're doing the tribute, you always have somebody at the end of the night say 'you're gonna make it!'. There's no pressure on us to make it," said Frank. "It's just all fun, and doing AC/DC is pleasing a lot of people, and we get pleasure out of that."
"We plan to do it for a long time. As long as people wanna come out and rock and roll. And I think people really need rock and roll, especially with all that's happened. People wanna get back out again, it was torture for us not to play," said Crock. "Now, we're back, we got a lot of time to make up, so we're ready to rock you."
So, there's certainly no signs of the tribute band trend slowing down. If anything, it seems to still be growing.
If you're looking to catch Hellz Bellz in action, there's a couple chances this weekend.
Friday night, they'll be at The Last Shot in Millcreek, and this Saturday they've got a shot at East-Erie's Fulton Athletic Club.
