Millcreek Residents Attempt to Save Historic Building
Since the Millcreek Township General Authority voted on buying and demolishing five properties on West Eighth Street, residents have voiced support and concerns for the decision. One of the buildings, most recently Grasshopper, has been in Millcreek since the 1800's. Some Millcreek residents have now created a Facebook group called, Citizens In Support Of Saving the Schoolhouse, to try and keep the building from being demolished.
Chris Magoc, a Millcreek resident said, "in this county there are so few buildings that date back to the Civil War era but this one is one of them."
"If you think about it, that school building stands for three quarters of this township's history," Magoc said.
Georgiana Nicholson Ely says she is disappointed. "It is a sad thing that Millcreek has such little interest in saving historic buildings," she said.
Mary Ellen Magoc said that without history, "it is just anywhere USA so preserving this building helps document what happened in Millcreek when it was formed."
Millcreek Township Supervisor Jim Bock, who is against demolishing the buildings, said, "I think you can see this area revitalized again, bring in an architect, or a preservationist, or somebody that has a vision for this area rather than a wrecking ball."
"This is quite a grassroots effort of concerned residents for this building," Bock said.
UPDATE: According to Supervisor Bock, there will no longer be a special meeting on March 7th but there will be two open houses hosted by the Millcreek Township General Authority on March 21st at 9:30AM and 5PM.
