Disease Outbreak in Crawford County Kills 30-40 Deer

30 to 40 deer were found dead near the State Game Lands 214 in Crawford County. The deer were killed after contracting Hemorrhagic disease.
The deer were found in North Shenango and Sadsbury Townships the week of September 8.
Hemorrhagic disease (HD) affects wild cervids and is caused by viruses that are spread by biting midges.
According to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, disease outbreaks typically occur in late fall when biting midges are in abundance.
Elk and deer in Pennsylvania are susceptible to infection, white-tailed deer are more susceptible.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission said to date, no significantly negative disease impacts have been identified.
Hemorrhagic disease does not present a danger to people or their pets.
