It's a safe bet that most listeners of our radio partner station HAPPI 927 are at least slightly younger than 80 years old. Same story for the station's relatively young personalities, except for one.

It happens to every generation: They look at the next, younger generation and kind of scratch their heads at what makes them tick, so to speak.

That's the basic, comical concept behind a segment you can hear on our radio partners over at HAPPI 927 FM. It's called "Gram's Jams," and it has listeners trying to identify a hip-hop song.

The rapper in question? An 80-year-old woman...with a bit of an attitude.

For 80-year-old Judy Shannon, today's music can be mystifying. "Now we're on to… anything," she says, laughing.

But, she gives it her best effort, on a regular basis, on the airwaves of HAPPI 927 FM, in a segment they call Gram's Jams.

"I just do it from what I think of the lyrics," said Judy. "That's real easy to do because they don't make any sense to me."

The contest concept? Grandma Judy raps, and listeners guess the song. But this Grandma just can't seem to keep herself from reviewing those rhymes.

"They keep saying words, but they don't mean anything, and some of them are so negative," said Judy.

But, even as she laments the younger generation's musical taste, Grandma Judy admits time can provide some perspective.

"There were some pretty stupid ones for us too," said Judy. "The Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini? I mean, really… our grandmothers probably thought that was bizarre." "And how 'bout the Purple People Eaters? I mean, in high school, we had some pretty insignificant songs too."

As much as she enjoys the segment, Judy says the hip-hop lifestyle's not for her. "No, not at all," she laughs. "I'm not a poet… but neither are they, so."

You can catch Grandma Judy Shannon on HAPPI 927's "Gram Jams" segment every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 7:30 a.m.
