An International Program recognizing the exemplary work of nurses was given out in Erie on Wednesday, February 14. 

Leaders at the local hospital Encompass Health held the first Daisy Award presentation, there on Wednesday. 

Recipients are registered nurses who showcase the nursing values of compassion, respect, integrity, and teamwork in their daily work.

The award was created by a family who lost a son years ago. They wanted to honor nurses who gave him dignified care.

Michael Barreto, a native of the Philippines and working his first job as a nurse in the U.S., received the award. 

Nominations for the Daisy Award are collected from patients, families, and co-workers.
