Work to replace the Mageetown Rd. bridge in Rome Township, Crawford County, will start later this month.

The bridge goes over Shirley Run.

The project includes building a new concrete bridge at the same location as the current structure, paving the roadway leading up to the bridge, and updating guiderail and pavement markings.

Construction is scheduled to start May 20, weather-permitting, and wrap up by November.

The project will require a detour using Route 89 and Bethel Church Rd. It is expected to be in place for about four months.

The existing, single-span, steel string bridge was built in 1950 and is classified as being in poor condition. Approximately 175 vehicles a day use the bridge.

Chivers Construction Company, of Fairview, was awarded the $1,074,130 contract, which will be paid using federal funds.
