Local Animal Shelter's Reading Program Benefits Kids and Kittens
Paws Along the River in Warren, PA is making a significant impact on both students and cats in the community.
“Kids Read to Cats” is Paw's new outreach program, designed to not only help socialize their kittens but also encourage local students to keep up with their reading during the summer break.
The program runs every Saturday this summer from noon until 3:00pm until August 17th.
Guardians can sign up for a 30 min. spot where children are welcome to stop by and bring their favorite book to read.
Community response has been overwhelmingly positive, with spots filling up every weekend.
"The kids love it, the parents love it," stated Jodi, Office Manager and Community Outreach Coordinator at Paws Along the River. "The positive reaction from the community has been amazing."
“My son really likes cats, but we don’t have any at home yet," said Colleen Vignere, Warren resident. "So, this was a good opportunity for him to practice his reading and spend some time with cats which is something he enjoys.”
“I like cats, so this is fun," said Nate Vignere, 3rd grade student. "They are sort of listening to me (read). I just really hope my mom lets me keep one."
Both parents and kids have been very happy with the initiative.
“I heard about a similar program somewhere else," commented Kayla Wise, Warren resident. "So, when we heard that Paws Along the River was offering something similar with cats, we had to come visit. My children are in the summer reading program at the warren public library, so this helps them get their books in as well as play with cats.”
Organizers also noted that the program has boosted their adoption rates, with three cats already finding new homes as a result of the reading program.
Due to its success, they're now considering extending the program into the school year.
