City of Erie property owners can soon face fines for having trash and debris in their yards.

Starting in April, City of Erie Code Enforcement officers will conduct targeted inspections throughout the city.

Property owners who have excessive junk and debris in their yards will receive a courtesy notice, giving them two weeks to address the issue.

"A majority of our homeowners and residents are responsible and take care of their properties," said City of Erie Director of Office and Development Services Chris Groner. "You've got a few that don't and that has outsized a negative effect on the neighborhoods."

After those 14 days, code enforcement will issue a citation if the property isn't cleared.

"If the city has to remove debris, it will be whatever that cost is, and there is a formula for that," said Groner. "We anticipate in most cases, it's likely to be $1,000 or more."

According to Mayor Joe Schember, it's all part of the city's efforts to address blight throughout Erie.

"I think over time, it's going to transform Erie," said Mayor Schember. "It's going to take some time. There's eight different areas that we will be working in and it's a week or two in each area and we are starting in the areas that are the worst, that need the most assistance."
