Allburn Florists Navigates Tariffs on Imported Flowers
At Allburn Florists in Erie, Manager Melissa Roberts says they've managed to avoid rising costs but still feel the effects of tariffs on Canadian imports, which have made it more difficult to stock certain flowers.
While this presents a challenge, she also acknowledges that the tariffs have encouraged more customers to purchase locally.
"Bottom line, if prices increase by 25%, I will have to pass some of that along," Roberts explains, weighing the pros and cons of the tariffs.
The tariffs on imports, including seeds and soil, have impacted the price of flowers. Roberts shares that the flowers most affected by these changes are Urbana daisies and snapdragons, which are key components of many bouquets and floral arrangements.
Thankfully, Roberts took immediate precautions when she first heard the news about the tariffs. "I have a stockpile of pots and vases, but the fresh flowers I receive almost daily have definitely seen an increase," she says.
With busy holidays approaching and the blooming season in full swing, Allburn Florists is looking forward to Easter sales to help offset the impact of the tariffs.
Another silver lining, Roberts notes, is the increased local support: "You're going to get better service buying locally than calling any 1-800 number. That’s probably worth the 25% increase."
