Some students and faculty from Cathedral Prep are currently in Italy and Vatican City during the mourning period leading up to the funeral and burial of Pope Francis.

People from all over the world have flocked to St. Peter's Square during the week of mourning for Pope Francis.

Kayla Bogdanski, a Senior from Cathedral Prep said, "The atmosphere is really somber and a lot of people are paying their respects to the Pope."

The pre-planned spring break trip was led by Cathedral Prep, World Language teacher, Dr. Jonathan McLaughlin, who said he's never seen the Vatican like this. According to Dr. McLauglin, "This is my second or third trip with Cathedral Prep students to Europe and this is our first-time experiencing a world changing event, the death of a beloved figure, Pope Francis. We are here experiencing the crowds, there's lots and lots of people here, everyone is very excited but it's also solemn and I think the students are getting a lot out of being here and being able to experience this moment with people from all around the world."

Dr. McLaughlin said it seemed like security doubled and there were a lot more road blocks in place. All eyes are on the Vatican as media from all over the world set up to cover the funeral and the conclave. Students noticing entire portions being blocked off for reporters and photographers.

Spencer Kanne, a Senior from Cathedral Prep described the atmosphere, "It's kind of surreal to be honest with you. As you can tell there's a ton of people here and it's kind of crazy to be a part of history."

Students said they were grateful to be at the Vatican during this monumental time in history. "It's such a profound moment , not only in the country's history, but the world's history. And our history as young adults, it will be our first election that we can see and we can remember, it's such an amazing time to be here", said Lohan Mastrian, a senior at Cathedral Prep.

Students said they didn't see a lot of extra shrines or vendors selling memorabilia for Pope Francis, but did said there were a lot of posters for the late Pontiff.

The group is supposed to be back in Rome on Saturday, but are unsure if they will be anywhere near the Vatican for the funeral.
