With the primary election approaching, members of the Erie County Democratic Party on Sunday endorsed candidate Daria Devlin for mayor.

Only two of the three candidates on the Democratic ballot took part: incumbent Mayor Joe Schember and Daria Devlin. Sheila Ellyn Woeger did not attend.

Each candidate had 30 minutes — 15 to give a presentation and 15 to answer six key questions from the party.

City committee members voted between endorsing incumbent Joe Schember, challenger Daria Devlin or issuing no endorsement. Devlin won the majority. The county committee then voted to approve that endorsement.

Devlin thanked committee members, saying, "The party's support is a powerful voice of confidence in this campaign and the future we envision for Erie."

Mayor Schember addressed the endorsement with the following statement:

“The endorsement I truly care about is the endorsement of the voters of the City of Erie. As Mayor, I represent the nearly 100,000 people who live in our beautiful city. I’m focused on serving them day-in and day-out. I love this job because it's all about serving the people. I’m passionate about doing what’s best for them in the long-term and am committed to leaving a legacy for the future. I have built an incredible team. We are in the 8th year of a 12-year strategy. Hopefully, our residents will vote for me on May 20 so we can finish what we started.”

The voters will have their say with mail-in ballots or at the polls Tueday, May 20.

The Republican candidate for mayor — attorney Matthew Thomas — is running unopposed.
