A brief stretch of scorching hot days and nights has sent residents of Erie, Pennsylvania, scrambling to find relief from the heat. Many have turned to Lowe’s on Peach Street, where air conditioning units have been flying off the shelves.

Ali Jebur, who was shopping with his family, described the unbearable heat. “Oh man, it’s so hot, it’s so hot I don’t know how to describe it. I just sit in my bed—I’m just soaking wet from all this sweat, man, it’s unbelievable. It feels like sitting inside an oven,” he said with a laugh.

The staff at Lowe’s has been working hard to help customers find ways to stay cool. According to Jen Albrewczynski, the Operations Assistant Store Manager at the Peach Street location, the demand for air conditioning units has been overwhelming. “Oh absolutely, we sold out a ton over the weekend. This is actually all we have left at the moment,” she said, pointing to a dwindling stack of units at the front of the store.

For those on a tighter budget, basic box fans are available, but Jen noted that most customers are looking for air conditioners to provide that much-needed cool air. She explained the options available: “So this is a window unit—this actually covers 330 square feet, so this would be better for a bigger room. This runs $489. And then we have portable air conditioners, and they’re the ones that sit on the floor and connect out the window, so they’re also nicer for a bigger room.”

The demand has been so high that Lowe’s has sold out of smaller air conditioners designed to cool single rooms. However, the store is expecting an emergency shipment from company headquarters in North Carolina to arrive on Wednesday. “They did request an emergency shipment for us,” Jen said. “They do that—when we had all the blizzards and stuff around Thanksgiving, we also got an emergency shipment of snow blowers, so this does happen on occasion. They are very intuitive to what we need.”

While snow blowers now sit unused, collecting dust, Erie residents are turning to air conditioning to beat the heat. The new shipment is expected to include smaller window units and additional stock to meet the high demand.
