Erie County Human Relations Commission Issues Statement on Death of Marchello Woodard
The Erie County Human Relations Commission has released a statement following the death of Marchello Woodard, offering condolences to his loved ones and reaffirming its commitment to justice and equity across the community.
“As Director of the Erie County Human Relations Commission, I want to extend my deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Marchello Woodard,” the statement reads. “His tragic death has shaken our community, and we stand with all those who are grieving and seeking clarity, justice, and healing.”
The Commission emphasized the need to reflect not only on the circumstances surrounding Woodard’s death, but also on the broader systemic issues disproportionately affecting Black and Brown residents in Erie County and beyond.
The ECHRC investigates discrimination complaints related to housing, employment, and public accommodations and offers community outreach and education. In its statement, the Commission acknowledged the long-standing barriers to justice often faced by marginalized communities and committed to ensuring voices are heard and rights are upheld.
As part of its ongoing response, the Commission announced it is partnering with community groups to organize an event focused on the experiences of Black and Brown residents.
The gathering will feature local leaders, advocates, and residents, with a goal of fostering truth, healing, and action.
“Every person in our community deserves to feel safe, seen, and supported,” the Commission stated. “We will continue our work until this vision is realized.”
Details about the upcoming community event will be released in the coming days.
