PennDOT will be starting three projects to improve safety and service along Interstate 90 in Erie Co.

The work will include new ramp gates on several on-ramps, repairs to sections of the highway, and demolition of the closed Beckman Rd. bridge in Girard Twp.

The projects will soon begin with the bridge demolition in Girard. It was damaged by a large vehicle in February. Preliminary work will begin on Sept. 2.

The demolition will begin on Sept. 8 and is expected to take three weeks.

Most of the work will happen at night, PennDOT said.

Gates will be installed at these locations on I-90 and I-79 in Erie County:

  • I-90 and Route 6N (Route 3006)
  • I-90 and Route 98
  • I-90 and Route 832
  • I-90 and Route 8
  • I-90 and Route 290 (Bayfront Connector)
  • I-90 and Route 89
  • I-79 and Route 6N (Route 3006)
  • I-79 and Route 20
  • I-79 and West Road (Route 3020)

Those gates are expected to be installed by April 2026.

Several parts of Interstates 90 and 79 will also be repaired. The work includes repairs through a 17-mile stretch of I-90 from mile marker 18 to mile marker 35.

13 miles of I-79 from mile marker 165 to mile marker 178 in Erie and Crawford counties will also be repaired. The work is expected to be complete by Nov. 2026.

“PennDOT works quickly and safely to ensure roads and bridges are ready for the people who rely on them every day,” PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll said. “The Shapiro Administration is focused on making even more investments across Pennsylvania to keep people and our economy moving. And we’re investing in all types of communities – rural and urban.”
