$13.4 Million in Federal Funding for Broadband Access Expansion Announced By Senator Laughlin
On August 22, State Senator Dan Laughlin announced that more than $13.4 million in federal funding will go toward expanding broadband access in Erie County.
This expansion is through the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program. The BEAD program is federally funded and administered in Pennsylvania by the Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority.
This award will be used by broadband providers to expand service in the county areas that lack reliable high-speed internet. The expansion projects will improve connectivity by using a mix of fiber and satellite technology.
Laughlin said, "This investment is a major step toward closing the digital divide in Erie County."
"Reliable broadband is essential for education, healthcare, economic growth, and everyday life, and I'm proud to see these resources being directed to the residents of our community," Laughlin states.
The awards final approval is determined by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, and adjustments may be made during the review process. Applicants may choose to not continue certain projects or project areas, and funding can be shifted.
