A troubling trend is emerging in the battle against lung cancer. New data shows a rise in Lung Cancer cases among non-smokers. The warning signs of Lung Cancer often come during the later stages. About 10-20 percent of cases are occurring in nonsmokers. Some causes may include pollution, exposure to harmful chemicals, and secondhand smoke. Doctors are urging more awareness and encouraging more education about the disease. Signs of Lung Cancer may include coughing up blood even in small amounts, a persistent cough, and chest pain.

Doctor Stephen Kovacs specializes in pulmonology and says "Lung cancer like any cancer there's no rules. We know that your risk when you're a smoker is 20 times that of a nonsmoker. But what we're seeing those is larger populations or an uptick of population if you will, of patients that have never smoked are being diagnosed with lung cancer."

Doctor Kovacs also says genetic factors can be a contributing factor and encourages regular screenings if you are at risk.
