The Roman Catholic Diocese of Erie has released the following statement in response to Wednesday's shooting at a Catholic church and school in Minnesota:

It is with heavy hearts that we join the Catholic community of Minneapolis and all who have been affected by the tragic events that unfolded today. Our hearts are united in prayer with the community of Annunciation Catholic School.

May those who grieve be consoled, the injured be restored and all who responded be blessed for their courage. Please join us in lifting them up in prayer.

Two children were killed and 17 people were wounded after a shooter opened fire through the windows of the building in Minneapolis. It is an act the police chief called "absolutely incomprehensible."

The shooter was armed with a rifle, shotgun and pistol, authorities said.

The shooter is believed to have died by suicide, they said.
