Some people like ice cream a lot. Others love ice cream. Then, there are those who worship ice cream. For those folks, I have the perfect place to visit in Conneaut, Ohio.

I’m at Heavenly Creamery on Sandusky St. It's a former church building that's 118 years old. Inside is an ice cream shop where the custard-style ice cream is simply divine.

So is the decor.

The original pews are still here for customers to sit. The stained glass windows, first installed in the 1920s, are still here. The beautiful window in the front of the building was replaced in 1960.

The current ice cream flavors that are available are posted on hymn boards.

"Once you buy a church, your theme is already kind of decided. So we had to lean into that a little bit,” Joe Ericksen, co-owner of Heavenly Creamery, said.

Joe and his wife Christine purchased the once dilapidated church building in 2015. They wanted to save it from the wrecking ball.

The Ericksens, at first, were going to transform it into their home.

"Turning it into a house was a huge undertaking. But, we knew how to make ice cream, so we said, ‘Well, that's the plan now,’” Joe recalled.

The custard-style ice cream is made in the basement. Today, Joe is making Ginger Molasses Cookie ice cream.

Some of the ice cream flavors come from popular desserts normally eaten with a fork. Here, you get that flavor cold and creamy, served in a dish or on a cone.

"Right now we have Pineapple Upside Down Cake,” Joe said. “That recipe actually came out of my wife's grandmother's cookbook. We just figured out how to introduce it to ice cream."

Some of the flavors served at Heavenly Creamery include maple, French toast and candied bacon ice cream. They once served ice cream with buttered popcorn, M&Ms and caramel.

The Ericksens serve 130 different flavors each season.

About 350 flavors have been tried since they opened the shop ten years ago. Some flavors became legends. Others were duds. Joe said he's now working on a Parmesan ice cream. To that I say, Amen!

This year, Midwestern Traveler magazine honored the business with an award, saying it has "The Best Ice Cream in Ohio."

Heavenly Creamery is located at 264 Sandusky St. in Conneaut and is open from 3 to 9 pm seven days a week. The last day of the season is Sept. 30.
